How to avoid condensation in the bathroom

Condensation is one of the biggest problems that can occur in a bathroom. This moisture that accumulates on surfaces is responsible for the appearance of mould on ceilings and tile joints, as well as eventually causing deterioration of furniture and fittings.

Combating condensation in a damp room such as a bathroom seems a difficult task. In addition, the temperature contrast between the indoor environment and cold surfaces encourages condensation. However, it is possible to keep the problem at bay. All you have to do is put a few simple tips into practice and take a few steps.

The most important thing: good ventilation

Ventilation is important for two reasons. The first is that it is the quickest way for water vapour to escape to the outside. The second reason is that it helps to reduce the temperature difference we mentioned above, which causes condensation.

If the bathroom has a window, perfect, just opening it for a few minutes will be enough. And if it doesn't? The ideal is to put the extractor fan on a little before showering or bathing and keep it on for a while after you have finished.

Heating the bathroom

Another way to avoid condensation is to keep the bathroom heated. If the panelling is not too cold, the temperature contrast will not be as great and will reduce the chance of condensation. This is also helped by not using very hot water, as this generates more water vapour.

Improve insulation

The temperature difference with the outside is another factor that favours condensation if there are thermal bridges. To put an end to them, first of all, it is advisable to insulate the walls well.

There are different possibilities, from insufflating the chambers with insulating materials to acting from the outside with solutions such as the SATE system. This not only combats condensation in the bathroom, but also improves the energy efficiency of the entire home.

Windows should not be forgotten either. It is important that the frames are not made of conductive materials or that they have thermal break systems. Double glazing and sealing shutter boxes properly are other measures that help to prevent condensation.

Paint with breathable paints

This is a factor that is not always taken into account, but it is important, especially considering that it is usually the ceiling where the effects of condensation are most visible. Breathable paints insulate against moisture from the outside, but allow vapour to escape.

Small gestures that help

Avoiding leaving damp clothes in the bathroom and drying the tiles after showering to remove moisture also help to prevent condensation. You can also use an anti-humidity product or an electric dehumidifier, which tend to work well in small rooms.

With these measures, condensation in the bathroom will no longer be a problem. The best thing to do is to prevent it, but if you have not taken any measures and the first signs have appeared, it is essential not to let time pass and to act as soon as possible.
