Tips for unclogging the sink

Remains of soap or hygiene products, hair, lime dissolved in the water... All this means that, if we are not careful, the sink will end up clogging. Not only will it not swallow well, but unpleasant odours can easily develop.

So the best advice is to clean the drain regularly, especially at the first sign of a blockage. But how do you do that?

1. Use a manual drain cleaner

The simplest and most traditional remedies are sometimes the most effective. Try to always have a manual plunger at home. However, when using it, remember to cover the overflow well so that it has the right emptying effect.

2. Pour very hot water

Many times the clogging is caused by the fats contained in hygiene and cleaning products. To dissolve them, try pouring very hot water, practically boiling, you will see that in a short time the plug will be diluted and the sink will work again without problems.

The only precaution you should take is to check that the drain and the pipe are in good condition and can withstand very high water temperatures without any problem.

3. Vinegar and bicarbonate

If the jam persists, you can try these two products that you are sure to have at home. Pour a handful of bicarbonate down the drain and then very hot water. Let it work and if you see that the blockage has not completely dissolved, add bicarbonate again and then vinegar. You will hear the jam dissolve, as both products are effervescent. After a while you will only have to rinse well by pouring more hot water so that the dirt is dragged away.

If you use salt and bicarbonate instead of vinegar in the second step, the result will be just as effective.

4. Use a chemical plunger

You can find chemicals for pipe cleaning in specialist shops. You can use them if the other solutions do not end the blockage, but always follow the instructions carefully and avoid them as far as possible.

5. Check the siphon and the siphon tube

If the clog isn't deep, maybe you can clear it by removing the siphon from the sink. Put a bucket underneath when you remove the lid so that the retained water falls out. Check that there is no dirt in the curved part and if not, try pouring hot water directly into the pipe or carefully inserting a spring plunger.

The other point where there may be a blockage is in the siphon pipe. Simply unscrew the decorative cap, open the tube and remove any dirt inside before closing it again.

These are little tricks for cleaning pipes that do not present any major problems. But if the clogging is severe, it is best to seek the services of a professional. You should never pour liquids that may be corrosive or introduce elements to try to clear a persistent blockage because it can cause even greater damage to the pipes. Don't forget.
