Grandma’s tricks for shiny toilets

Soap, lime, rust or yellowish stains... With use and the passage of time, the toilets in our bathrooms can lose the luster and shine they had when they were new.

Sometimes daily cleaning is not enough and we have to go a little further to restore them to their original beauty. Of course, you can use specific products, but if you prefer more natural and equally effective solutions, there is nothing like drawing on the wisdom of our grandmothers, who did wonders with something as simple as vinegar, lemon, bicarbonate or hydrogen peroxide. Take note!

  1. Shiny toilets

We start with the simplest thing. If the only problem with the toilets is that they have a dull surface, first wipe them with a cloth soaked in warm water with lemon and let it work a little to remove the dirt. Then rinse and wipe with a cloth soaked in hot white vinegar. Rub with a dry, lint-free cloth and you're done! You'll see your toilets glow again.

  1. Stain removal and bleaching

Hydrogen peroxide is perfect for removing small grease stains. Just sponge the area and let it work for a few minutes before rinsing. Does the stain resist? Then rub gently with a paste made from half a cup of baking soda and two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. If you add lemon juice, in addition to removing the stain, the toilet will be whiter.

If it is a dark stain around the drain, rubbing with bicarbonate will be enough. Meanwhile, with vinegar you will remove soap residues and by rubbing half a lemon sprinkled with salt you will get rid of the rust stains.

In case of yellowish or stubborn stains, you can try a mixture of half a cup of turpentine with two tablespoons of salt. Soak a cloth with this paste and rub it carefully, leave it to work for a few minutes and rinse with plenty of hot water - it's a must!

  1. Remove the lime

Lime builds up, hardens and makes the toilets look old and unhygienic. The advice is to clean in depth with some frequency to avoid the formation of deposits. What would our grandmothers do to eliminate them? You can use three different mixtures, depending on what you have on hand:

  • Baking soda and white vinegar in equal parts.
  • Half a glass of white vinegar and the juice of a lemon.
  • Half a cup of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide.

In any case, just let the mixture act for a few minutes, rub carefully, rinse and then pass a soft step that does not leave any lint.

And one more trick, if it is the taps that have lime deposits, pour a little of any of the mixtures into a small bag and tie it to the nozzle so that it soaks in well. Then all you have to do is pass a brush through it and you will see how the water comes out again without any problem.

A few more tricks

You can see that having a clean toilet is not complicated and you can get it with products that you surely have at home. Besides, some of them like vinegar or oxygenated water are disinfectants, so they are perfect for the bathroom.

But what else would our grandmothers tell us? That we should use brushes to reach all corners (drain joints, toilet interiors, etc.), that we should not use the same rags for all the toilets, that kitchen paper to dry and polish is perfect and that, of course, we should try in a hidden area before applying any mixture to clean the toilets.
